Grandma Petrella's Popcorn Balls
Ingredients:
1 cup sugar
1/3 cup white corn syrup
1/3 cup water
1/4 cup butter or margarine
3/4 teaspoon salt
3/4 teaspoon vanilla
3 quarts popped corn
Directions:
- Pop corn and remove any unpopped kernels.
- Combine sugar, corn syrup, water, butter and salt in a saucepan and cook, stirring until
sugar is dissolved
- Continue cooking without stirring, until syrup forms a brittle ball in cold water
(270°F using candy thermometer)
- Add vanilla and stir only enough to mix it through the syrup.
- Place the popped corn in a bowl large enough for mixing.
- Pour cooked syrup slowly over the popped corn and mix well.
- Wet hands slightly and shape popcorn mixture into balls, using only enough pressure to
make the balls stick together.
- When cool, wrap balls in waxed paper.
Makes approximately 12 medium-sized popcorn balls.
