1 ½ cups flour ¼ teaspoon baking soda ¼ teaspoon salt ½ cup butter or margarine ½ cup brown sugar 1 egg 1 egg yolk (reserve white) ¼ teaspoon vanilla extract 1/8 teaspoon maple flavor, if desired 2/3 cups pecan halves, cut in half lengthwise
Ingredients for frosting:
½ cup semi-sweet chocolate morsels 3 Tablespoons cream ¼ cup confectioner's sugar 1 Tablespoon butter or margarine
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F
Sift flour with soda and salt. Cream butter. Add brown sugar; cream well. Blend in egg, egg yolk, vanilla and maple flavor. Add dry ingredients gradually; mix well. Chill.
Arrange pecans in groups of 5 on greased cookie sheets to resemble head and legs of turtle. Shape dough by rounded teaspoon-fulls into balls. Dip bottom into egg white; press lightly onto nuts so tips will show when baked.
Bake at 350 degrees F for 10-13 minutes till a delicate golden brown. Cool completely, then frost.
For frosting, melt chocolate morsels and cream in small saucepan. Add confectioner's sugar and butter; mix well.
