Tybee Island is about 20 minutes from Savannah, Georgia, and is worth the trip (It's even closer if you're staying with friends on Wilmington Island, but I digress). The locals advise that the public access by the lighthouse is more family-oriented than the one by the pier.

On a clear day, Hilton Head is visible on the horizon. We have sighted dolphins on nearly every visit. The crazed dive-bombing of the pelicans is also fun to watch.

The most popular dining establishment on the island is The Crab Shack, where "the elite eat in their bare feet". Low country boil is the specialty, if you're into crabs, shrimp and crawfish. My favorite place is the Sugar Shack, conveniently located on Highway 80. Although there are menu items for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, the fresh peach milkshakes and brown cows are the best. A brown cow is a delicious twist on a chocolate milkshake: chocolate ice cream and vanilla syrup instead of the usual vanilla ice cream and chocolate milk.

Except for Orange Crush weekend, Tybee Island is a great place for the entire family to enjoy. Just ask Emily and Caleb.
