Breakfast in Cincinnati

Cincinnati has a generous supply of Bob Evans and Cracker Barrel restaurants. And although our picks for breakfast are both chains, they aren't nearly as well-known. Both offer many great ways to start your day.

First Watch is a Florida-based chain that can bring the sun and surf to Cincinnati on a dreary winter morning. The staff is dressed in short sleeves and shorts. A pitcher of ice water is waiting for you on the table. A carafe of hot coffee can join it, if you so desire.

First Watch is only open for breakfast, brunch and lunch. The lunch fare is equally tasty, but we'll focus on breakfast. Always ask your server for the daily specials. Mushroom lovers will enjoy the Caps Etc, a generous portion of sauteed mushrooms topped with bubbling Monterey Jack and cheddar cheese, served with two eggs. The kicked-up Orchard Oatmeal adds fresh cinnamon apples to oatmeal, served with low-fat milk, granola and brown sugar. And finally, First Watch prepares pancakes the size of your head. Try the blueberry pancakes, made with fresh, whole blueberries and served with made-from-scratch blueberry sauce.

The Original Pancake House takes pancakes to a whole new level, with specialties such as their apple pancake, a large, fluffy delight with sauteed apples and cinnamon, baked in the oven. It's a good choice for your first visit.
