Aglemesis Brothers Graeter's United Dairy Farmers (UDF) locations throughout Cincinnati area |
Cincinnati Ice Cream There are three main establishments where you can find ice cream mostly exclusive to the Cincinnati area. The most elusive of the three is Aglemesis Brothers, although that doesn't mean that it should be as easily dismissed. Although the ice cream is good at both locations, the ambiance of the Oakley Square shop makes it worth the trip. The shop opened in 1913 and still has the original Portuguese marble countertops. Aglamesis also makes a wide variety of dark and milk chocolate candies. The most renouned of the three is Graeter's, especially after Oprah Winfrey announced that Graeter's was the "best ice cream I've ever tasted." Graeter's Their secret is the French Pot process, making ice cream in small batches, with the highest quality of ingredients. The most ubiquitous of the three is United Dairy Farmers, or UDF. Only in Cincinnati have I found a convenience store where you can pump your gas, then enjoy a chocolate malt. UDF's popular Homemade brand is also available in grocery stores around the country. The winner? Each has it's own merits and special charm. Try all three and decide for yourself! |
