I used to think of Columbus as a boring, flat city. My perception was created from a life of driving around Columbus on I-270 rather than spending time in it. My opinion changed in the summer of 2006 on a business trip in the Arena District. The downtown scene is culturally vibrant, and easily accessible to pedestrian travelers, making it much more like the convention city of Indianapolis rather than my home town of Cincinnati. My trip coincided with the General Convention of the Episcopal Church. It was a little strange to see restaurant patrons wearing clerical collars and holding martini glasses. So "let us pray" becomes "let us party"... During my stay in Columbus, my friends and I enjoyed lunch on the outdoor patios of Gordon Biersch and O'Shaughnessy's Public House. Based on a recommendation, I returned to Gordon Biersch for Chicken Marsala and a Hefeweizen. Barley's has a rotating selection of hand-crafted brews and a pub-style menu. And the end of my business trip was celebrated at Martinis, with Gnochi Vegitali and a fine Tirimi Su in, what else, a martini glass.
