A historic town southwest of Dayton, Ohio, Germantown was settled in 1804 by German-speaking families from Pennsylvania. The village of Germantown incorporated in 1833 and became a city in 1980. While in Germantown, be sure to have dinner at the Florentine Hotel, reputed to be Ohio's second oldest hotel. On our visit, we sampled the prime rib (only available on weekends) and the Fillet Diane, a tender fillet served with sautéed mushrooms in a delicate wine sauce. Don't miss the homemade pies and cheesecakes for dessert. We suggest making reservations. Just around the corner is Kathy's Kitchen, featuring home cooking at reasonable prices and a large, varied selections of homemade fruit and creme pies. The Cardinal Roost is a vibe-y 50's diner with real cherry cokes and lots of local high school memorabilia.
After dinner, take Ohio 725 west just to the outside of town, where you'll find the Germantown MetroPark, offering fishing, wildlife viewing, and scenic overlooks. |
