Greenville is approximately 40 miles northwest of Dayton and 35 miles northeast of Richmond, Indiana. It is the county seat of Darke County, birthplace of Annie Oakley. It's also home to the ubiquitous KitchenAid stand mixer. These two facts converge in late July when the KitchenAid Experience store has an incredible sale during the Annie Oakley Days festival. If you are a serious cook, you must visit the KitchenAid Experience store, where you can see demonstrations and purchase KitchenAid products. The store is also a museum of sorts, with a display of older versions of KitchenAid stand mixers. Julia Child's KitchenAid mixer is also proudly on display. While in Greenville, you must sample the unique Maid Rite sandwhich from the Maid Rite Sandwich Shop. Imagine a sloppy joe without the sauce. Add some onions, mustard and pickle and voila! Although the Maid Rite boasts thick shakes, we were frustrated by the cheap, narrow straws. Don't leave the restaurant without a close examination of the outside wall, affectionately known as the Wall of Gum. Montage, is a cafe and gift shop with interesting decor and nicely made egg salad. On the other side of the street you will find Winans Chocolates & Coffees. We sampled the freshly made coffee and hot chocolate, plus took a one pound box of choclates home for later. Take US 36 east out of town to Arcanum Bearsmill road to the Bears Mill, a functioning 4-story water-powered mill. On the day of our visit, the mill was unable to grind flour and meal, but we did find locally produced jams, jellies and honey. We are looking forward to returning to Bears Mill for their Christmas Open House and to see the mill in action.
